Technology

Technology is an ever changing variable, it is always changing, if a clock is ticking somewhere, technology is getting better somewhere. Does anyone remember when we had to write programs in BASIC, and run them on an Apple II? I do, it may have been fun, but that was because we didn't know that in the next ten years we would develop such amazing capabilities as the internet, mulitmedia, object-oriented programming, and mice!

My specialization occurs on only two things, technology develop by Apple Computer, and Computer Hardware. These are the two aspects I will focus upon.

Apple Computer Technology-
Over the last two years, Apple has made an incredible comeback, and it has nothing to do with luck, Apple has developed some of the greatest technology ever seen, and it seems to be reentering its golden age. In the 80's Macintoshwas undeniably the computer with the best technology. But that all changed becuase they stopped innovating, in order to keep a computer company running, you must innovate, you have to do something that will make everyone's mouths drop open and say "I want that!". With the iMac, Powerbook G3, and Power Macintosh G3 Yosemite, Apple is doing just that, everyone I have ever met, even die-hard PC users admits that the iMac looks cool. Some even like the Power Macintosh G3 better than the iMac. But the point is that even those that hate Macs still admit that they have a good quality.

Looks aren't the only good quality. Apple has completely redesigned their operating system. Try sitting down at my home Mac, then sit down at an iMac, it's like a completely different type of computer, OS 8 improved the Mac OS so much that people that had been sitting on Mac Classics, bought a newer mac, just to use OS 8,
and now we all have OS 8.6, and even greater addition, which enables Sherlock, the revolutionary Find utility, imagine, being able to surf the web, without having a browser open! That is exactly what Sherlock does. It will search your keywords in all major internet search engines, your local hard drive, and a network, it will also weed out finds that don't have much to do with the subject.

Also on Apple's killer app list is their Multimedia software. Quicktime 4 is revolutionary, you can run almost anything using Quicktime 4, MP3's MP2's AVI's MOV's, MPEG's, any kind of music or video you can think of, Quicktime will run it. Along with Quicktime, Apple also has released Final Cut Pro, an amazing video editing package. Final Cut Pro is much more advanced than Adobe Premiere, and costs almost the same price. To see a demonstration on Quicktime 4.0 along with video production capabilities of Final Cut Pro, click here.

Computer Hardware-

Computer hardware has made some mjaor leaps of its own as well. I remember when my 66 mhz Mac flew! Now it crawls, it never really got any faster or slower, but every other computer I used got faster. I also remember when 16 megs of RAM was being wasteful, now their is never too much RAM, as soon as the boards can fit more, we need more. Now a Power Macintosh G3 Yosemite, can sport up to a GIGABYTE of RAM. Processors keep getting faster clock speeds, but what most don't know is that nowadays, a faster clock speed can be a bad thing. A Pentium III 500 roughly compares inspeed to a G3 366, notice how the G3 has a smaller number, yet still keeps pace with the Pentium III. That's because the G3 is a RISC processor, it requires less instructions to the CPU in order to do things, so what takes a Pentium III 20,000 instructions to do, a G3 could do it in about 11-12,000. Now a Pentium III and another Pentium III, a higher clock speed will mean more performance.
